Mt Kaukau Summit Hike — Simla Crescent Trailhead
Very busy track through dense forest but way laid with well maintained stairs. Went beyond the summit to the beautiful coastline defined by wind turbines, deep blue water and the mountainnranges ifnthe Marnorough regions. The trail is moderately hard in places but anyone can do it easily.

Mt Kaukau Summit Hike — Simla Crescent Trailhead
My favourite suggestion when visiting Wellington. It’s not a hike, more of a walk but is a good workout Once you reach the summit/too. I suggest wearing trainers but to be honest I have done it in jandals once unexpectedly strolling up! It takes 1hour return. You can get the bus to Khandallah Village or train to Khandallah station and the trailhead is five minute walk from there, past Khandallah pool and park. I highly recommend doing this for all visitors to Wellington. On a clear sunny day you can get a beautiful view of all of Wellington region out to the Hutt Valley and to Porirua, you fan also see the South Island. You may sometimes find cows up here too, and you can take your dog up! Beautiful memorial benches are placed and a table if you would like to picnic! There is also a Trig further back if you walk North slightly for a different view of Ohariu Valley and Makara. You can carry on North or West to do the Northern Walkway which is along the ridegline. Anybody can do this walk, worth the view!

Great views of Wellington and South Island. The walk is short and kid friendly if they can handle 10 or so flights of stairs.Bring water and and a wind breaker, it's very exposed at the top

Mt Kaukau Summit Hike — Simla Crescent Trailhead
Start at Simla Crescent and head straight up the hill. The path is wide and there are plenty of well-constructed steps. Take water (you’ll probably need it) and you might need a light jacket or pullover if it is windy because it can be cold at the top. Took us 40 minutes to get to the mast from the bottom. It is a bit of a puff but well worth it. Enjoy.
