I can’t pound the pavement, but I love to run bush tracks, this one is local to me and is a quiet rarely used track, goes all the way to the top of the mountain where you can explore the crater which is full of trees and big holes where rain water goes down, as a kid I once was caught in a rain storm up there and saw and heard the water gurgling down what sounded like a bottomless hole..

Lovely 20 minute bushwalk at the foot of Maungatapere. Private land, but public access is permitted - the non-bush area is a working farm so stay out of that. Park off the road and walk up the path between rwo volcanic stone walls. Great for kids, even small ones, but not buggy friendly. The bush tracks are well marked, but maintenance is done by volunteers so sometimes it takes a while before treefalls are cleared and you have to do a little clambering. Plenty of big trees, especially Puriri, and the birdlife is extensive - almost certain to see piwakawaka and kokopū.

45 minute walk to the top. Beautiful forest with impressive puriri trees. Track is steep and unformed - follow the orange triangles. Worth it if you like a good leg stretch or botany - but don’t do it if you like maunga with good views from the top, as there isn’t one.
