If you have time, definitely worth a walk in. We took better shoes and climbed up to see the beach from above - wow. What a beauty. I wouldn't recommend climbing if you are afraid of heights though. My heart stopped several times. Highly recommended

The walk to the beach takes you over a tidal creek at the northern end carpark of Whangapoua Beach, so best to check tides before you go. After about 100m of rock jumping, the track starts in the edge of the bush. Could be very muddy & slippery during / after rain. 15 mins later you are at New Chums beach. There are plenty of trees proving shade if you want to sit for a while and enjoy the serenity & view after your walk along the beach or swim. Well worth the drive & walk to experience one of NZ's best beaches.

A beach like no other! My daughter told us that this was voted one of the top 10 beaches in the world. I was curious to check out why.It did not disappoint. The beach can be accessed only by walk, about 30 minutes. To reach there from the car park, I had to wade through shallow water, then walk to sand, then on rocks, then through a forest till finally arriving at the secluded and sheltered beach. There is plenty of shade for those who like it, and plenty of sand for everyone. No boats or any other machine activity. Just humans and nature. There is also a side walk for the more adventurous which takes you to the top of the hill. The walk is steep in places but the views are rewarding. Not for everyone, though.

Amazing secluded beach. Requires a little hike around the rocks and pathway, therefore reccomened wearing shoes rather than any slip on or slip off shoes. Walk is approximately 20 mins and is mostly shaded. There is a nice hike up a mountain for those of which want a nice view, (pictures) slightly more difficult but definitely worth a go.The beach itself is nice and refreshing. However, when we went last week (13/1/19) there was this weird red seaweed floating throughout which hindered our experience compared to the first time we went.Strong waves so be a little careful as no lifeguards,Never the less, enjoyable beach and good to experience!

The beach itself is ok but for me climbing the hill / rock was pretty awesome. To find the way there turn right after the SECOND sign where it says that it takes 30-40 min walk to the beach. I would not advice to climb this rock if it has been raining as the stones and soil could be slippery. Hiking shoes would be perfect for this climb and walk.

This beautiful secluded beach is definitely worth the trek over. Make sure to do your research ahead of time on how to get there, because my group got lost on the way and we ended up taking much longer to get there. You’re supposed to walk all along the edge of the water on the big rocks which is quite difficult and slippery. I hurt my foot on the way back. But once you get there, it’s lovely. We had the whole place to ourselves and hung out in the shade under the big trees lining the beach.

Went to this beautiful beach, absolutely stunning and amazing place, there’s also a nice 30 min walk you can do around the beach lookout area. Pro tip : be prepared to take your shoes off on the sand as there’s a little stream / river thing you need to cross to get to the other side of the beach. Overall amazing beautiful hidden beach. Also carpark is located at the end of the road it will have a sign that says William Mangakahia Lagoon Reserve.

One of NZ’s best beaches - really soft light sand. Absolutely worth the walk there, gives it a rewarding element when you finally reach the beach. The beach is huge, could fit thousands of people probably - would be great to pack for a multiple hour stay.

It was high tide, so we started by wading knee deep across the stream and then had a km stretch of rough, tough walking over the rocks (but manageable - even for an 80 year old!). Also rather muddy and slippery after all the rain the last few weeks so we did not go up to the lockout point.
