About the Business

Slope Point | Slope Point is the southernmost point on the South Island of New Zealand and is accessible via a 20 minute walk across private farmland. Once there, a yellow AA signpost shows the distance to the equator and the south pole. The views of the surrounding ocean and coastline off of the point's steep rugged cliffs are spectacular. A particularly fascinating sight at Slope Point are the crooked, bent over trees. Cold air whirls around the Antarctic Ocean uninterrupted, causing the winds to gain immense strength before they smash themselves onto this exposed coastal area in such a persistent and violent manner that the trees here are perpetually warped and windswept. Note: Dog access is NOT allowed as you'll be walking through private farmland to get to the point.

“One step further and I am the furthest I have ever been” - Samwise GamgeeWell its the very end of the Southern island. Its kinda what you would expect. There is a signpost. And a cliff. And a sunset/rise if you get lucky. And boy what it is.Its about 15 minutes walk from the parking lot through some sheepland. Romantic.

Only 10 minutes walk from the car park into private property. Grateful for the access. You will find lot of sheep on the farm. The view is spectacular. Windy but breath taking view.

Due to its exposed position, this coastline sees some of the country's largest ocean swells, raising impressive waves from Antarctic storms. The Catlins is prone to weather patterns which originate from the sub-Antarctic ocean. The wind was howling gale force when I was here and the surrounding area is infamous for shipwrecks going back the last century.Already dubbed the roaring 40

Hurrah! Made it as close to Antarctica as I can (this holiday at least!). It definitely felt like it too - super icy winds, so if you dislike the cold bring a warm jacket and a beanie! This is a free site - which had a free, decent size carpark. Unlatch the gate, and walk dow the path, and walk through the field down to the sign for your end of NZ experience. It's an easy enough walk, with lot's of sheep in the field next to you (ewe?), that make for photogenic photos.. No toilets here nor any shops, so hold on until Curio Bay (or.. if you planned poorly, like us, go back again to Curio Bay for toilets, snacks and drinks!)..

It feels like worlds away from civilisation here, secluded with strong winds and massive waves. A good windbreaker or puffer jacket would help. It’s a short 10min walk from the carpark on flat grassland sloping downwards gradually. Amazing views too

Awesome place! Great views! But do not run in slides down the hill. Very wet and muddy and lots of damp places.

There's not much here, and it's a bit dangerous at the cliff end, but there are wonderful views and it is well worth the walk across the paddock to get to the southernmost point of the South Island.
