Smales Quarry site
Smales quarry is recognisable by a sizable cavity in the ground on the edge of the water-filled volcanic explosion crater of Lake Pupuke. The quarry was once an important source of scoria and basalt. In its last manifestation, the site was used as a concrete recycling works, but was closed in the 2010s due to health concerns. Today the site is fenced off and inaccessible, but much can be seen from the perimeter. It is proposed to utilise the quarry pit for basement parking as part of a high density housing development for the site.
