Excellent food and coffee. Lovely old hotel being renovated by a very hospitable family. A must visit when traveling around this part of the south island. Best wedges ever and amazing steak n cheese pies.

We stumbled upon the tavern on the way to Nelson after taking the Picton Ferry.Turned out to be the perfect place for lunch. The food was great! Warm and friendly staff with a cozy ambience completes the experience.Would stop by again on the way back!

What a pleasant place for a coffee and cake. The exterior looks the same but the interior is better than ever. More room, pleasant owners and a much nicer atmosphere.Well worth a visit.

I love that Google allows a choice between Food, Service, and Atmosphere. As a Yelper in the states it's a one size fits all or nothing. Many times my comments are a step by step explanation of why. So this makes its short and sweet.Loved the old building. It's in need of some TLC but that's an ongoing process. However do not pause in the process or other projects will skip in and take precedence.I had the steak sandwich, just lovely. Tasted great. If a couple or group stops, in at least one must order the steak sandwich. They have a full bar. They have a horse who will sometimes come and get a pet. But would probably stay back if too many people approach.Over all this place is a solid four stars. To the owner: these comments reflect nothing on you or your staff (which we found extremely courteous), but are intended to help. The back area is nice but could use a redo. I would plan it out, then section it off into two sections. Serve in one, while upgrading (before or after hours)the other. Once the upgrade is complete, section the other off and complete. In this way service is not interrupted.I would also add. Historic" to the title. A placard or a poster that has the history of the building if you have that information.People LOVE old things especially if there is a story behind it.If the valley is always windy. Replace the tall numbers with small short ones. Or something unique. The wind catches them. It might not seem like an issue. But little negative things add up. Patrons trying to find a place to put the numbers can sometimes get frustrated by the little things. I just laid it on its side problem solved. But just saying.I did not use the toilet but if it needs work that's a priority. A reputation of a functional toilet that's kept clean will bring people in the door

Love the fried chicken and chips. Amazing customer service and an amazing ambiance of being cozy and welcome. Didn't have the chance to grab a beer, but that's a good alibi to come back soon. Very kid friendly as there are so much to toys to keep them occupied. Plus, there are tables outside and a play area for the kids with a stunning view.
