An amazing view in this area - the viaduct is one feature in an amazing landscape. Only wish other drivers were more patient with us slowing down to take in the sights.

The Makatote Viaduct is a fantastic structure. It was built between 1905-08 and was the tallest railway viaduct in New Zealand at the time. Now it’s the third tallest. It’s an amazing feat of engineering and well worth a quick stop. You can’t miss this striking railway viaduct as the road runs by the side of the valley and under the bridge. It’s also a great place to learn about its history.
