Stewart Island Backpackers

Fantastic place to stay while on the island, awesome friendly staff, lovely tidy rooms, and a amazing kitchen/ common area with everything you need to have a comfortable stay. Would happily stay again and recommend to anyone wanting to stay on stewart island.

Such a lovely, clean place, so tidy and the hosts are really nice people

We camped here in a tent (before and after our hike).And I loved it here - one of the best places I stayed at on NZ! Great staff, Carol knows a lot about the area and hikes and is always smiling, kind, calm and glad to help you. Everyone else always smiles and happy to help. Great atmosphere.Reception is 7am-7pm.They offer to store your extra stuff while you hike.Facilities are clean. Kitchen well equipped (microwaves, stoves, ovens, pots and pans, cutlery, plates, cups, bowls, French presses, rice cooker and more). Lounge has a pool table, lots of comfy sofas. TV with DVD player and quite a selection of DVDs (LOTR and Hobbit included ;)).Laundry on site, coin operated - can break your bills on the reception + buy soap there.WiFi is free, but tends to be slow when many people are on it - if you need smt more, mobile data might be the way to go (cell coverage in Oban is great). But in the middle of the day or middle of the night, it runs quite fast.Campsites are flat and on a nice soft grass.You can spot a kiwi and kaka in the area and enjoy a morning concert from tuis and so on.

Great place to stay to come and go with hiking. It must be a logistical nightmare for them, but they manage it really well, great service, clean facilities, slightly small bedrooms

An absolute gem. Super friendly and very helpful staff, great facilities, perfect location. I was staying in a 4-persons dorm, but we were only two. I got a soft towel which was much appreciated after hiking for a few days. You can do the laundry, plenty of space to hang it to dry, you can relax in the garden or spacious living room, the kitchen has everything you need to cook. They also give great advice on what to see and do in the area. I totally recommend and wish I could stay longer!

A very nice place with a very cool lodge and kitchen, got a tv, couches and a pool table (which you need to pay a dollar to play though).Our ferry left at 15pm and we needed a place to stay, and the staff let us stay in the lodge area until then, which was amazing!Thank you very much for the beautiful stay!

Thoroughly enjoyed our first backpacking and a couple of oldies. The beds were comfortable, the room cosy. Bathroom close and the lounge and kitchen were a delight. Got to meet great people, young and old from around N Z
