Giant Sand Dunes
A very unique part of NZ. If you are using your own boogie boards to sand surf the steep dunes, make sure you are not using a small board as it would be a very slow surf. Of course there's a truck shop where you can hire boards which I recommend and when doing so, there's a bond like a driver's license or passport or cash. Take at least a litre of water with you as those dunes are hot, steep and soft to climb.

A great place to take the kids or just visit yourself. Was very hot so didn't go up, but it looks like fun. Huge rolling sand dunes perfect for jumping or sliding down. Very picturesque desert in the middle of the nowhere in the far North!

A sight not expected to see of NZ, but WOW. You can spend hours wandering the dunes (and we did). Would have loved to have tried the sand dune boarding, we had gotten there too early for that, but definitely could see that as an enjoyable experience too!P.S. watch out for the cows and sheep!

Visited the Giant Dunes of Northland right for the beginning of the year!It was such a fun experience but you gotta be ready for it .Overall, it was so fun riding the dunes, so exhausting though, sliding down was to fast compared to the amount of work it takes to climb back haha. But the place it definitely Worth it, there's so much to see around and with a lot of cultural significance. There's no cellphone signal or very poor, so you need to take some cash with you if you want to rent a board.Parking is limited and small. There are toilets at place and even a camping ground that's only accessible with a UTE or 4x4.

Incredible dunes, they were huge and gorgeous, we got rain while we were there and it make it a magical place. When you arrived there is a Māori man (very friendly) renting the board to slide in the dunes, totally worth it, not expensive and it was fun.

One of the best and funniest things we did on the Northern Island. The dunes are incredible and if you rent a sand board for $15 you will have a lot of fun :)

This is a great place to visit for A 1/2 day. The dunes are very tall, and not wheelchair accessible. Please consider bringing socks as the sand gets quite hot. Shoes/sandals are not recommended as it will make it difficult to ascend in the sand. There could be more signage as it’s not really clear where to go to slide. On and wear some sun glasses or sun visors. They rent boards ($15) and socks ($3) on site.Bring a backpack with cold water, socks and sun hats. It is a real cardio workout!

Such a fun experience sliding down these massive dunes. Dave will rent you a board for 15$ and is super friendly. He has been taking care of the area for over 20years. Most of what he makes goes into conservation and taking care of the land. There are toilets and spots for lunch, and you can rinse off in the stream after you're done.
