Easy and free walk.A recommended visit for city dwellers! Take some time lying on the grass with your eyes closed to take in the environment.Great place to have a picnic as well.

Beautiful walk with views of the mountains. The rocks are really impressive, they are huge! And there is a lake that some days it gets frozen!Recommended if you’re a LOTR fan or if you want to have a short stop to stretch your legs and walk a bit :)

Amazing rock formations & geology. A great place for budding climbers to practice. Steep in places but a great hike all the same. Very hot and dry in summer and freezing in winter. Good parking facilities at entrance. Nearby Cave Stream Walk is also worth doing.

This was the first site we visited in a 5-week trip to New Zealand. We got our rental car in Christchurch, drove a little more than an hour, and there it was — this unbelievable dreamscape of huge, wild, wind-sculpted ameboid rock formations that beggars the imagination. A 40-minute path loops up and around the site accessible to the public. I recommend heading right when the path forks: the uphill section is a bit easier this counterclockwise direction than it would be from the other. It’s easy to see why this is often mistaken as a film location for Lord of the Rings or Hobbit movies.I was utterly enchanted, with my sense of wonder heightened at every turn. This is a must-see for every visitor to Christchurch!

A great, free and accessible walk to enjoy multiple different views. Saw people rock climbing, families with picnics and even a car cruise meetup.Halfway through a two year update and renovation so keen to see what else gets added and cleaned up.Great views of different rock formations and high up climbs for brilliant views of the area.

I’d never heard of this place until we planned our drive over Arthurs Pass, but it’s impossible to miss, easy to reach, and well worth the stop.About an hour from Christchurch, so, roughly half way to Arthur’s Pass, the first sign of the rocks is the cars parked all along the highway (though we still found a spot in the car park). There’s picnic tables, a shelter, decent toilets, and the path to the rocks is wide and flat and takes only 10-15 minutes.Once there you can do a short loop up and through the rocks, which is interesting, but the best views are on the walk up.Takes about an hour to park, walk up and back and wander through, but you could easily do this in half an hour if you just wanted the best views and pictures. There’s no cafes nearby, so bring your own supplies if planning lunch.
