Fowler's Wild Bluff Oysters

Just had a marvelous early lunch here.We had raw oysters on the half shell, some cooked battered oysters and a wonderful fish called Green Bone.The Green Bone was so fresh and cooked to perfection and was one of the best pieces of fish that I have ever had (and I had never heard of it before. The lovely ladies who served it said it was a kind of Butterfish).This little stop became our highlight of the day.

Wife & I went from Invercargill to Fowler at Bluff to sample their Oysters & Blue Cod take-aways. The fries were nothing outstanding, as was the battered blue cod.As for the oysters, they were hardly worth a mention. Small, No2's, mostly batter. I am of the opinion that the oil /fat in the vats was near the end of its life. Judging by the amount of people turning up for a feed the change wasn't going to happen any time soon. Wife & I enjoy good food, but I dare say there are plenty of folks who enjoy 3rd rate grease, especially kids.

Best Oysters, extremely fresh. And the best fish and chips we've had in Invercargill! The portions were huge so one portion of fish could quite happily serve 2.

Called in was a real windy day and bought 2 dozen raw oysters. They were so good forgot all about the wind. The service was tops. The menu seemed good as were the prices but was just interested in the oysters. Well worth a call in.

Being Kiwis’ who now live in Australia we really look forward to partaking of good fish and chips when we visit NZ. We happened to be visiting Invercargill on this trip and thought ‘what better place to have some Bluff oysters and fish and chips than Bluff’. We thought wrong - this was the greasiest offering I think we’ve ever had….way worse than what we can buy in Australia even and I thought that was bad! The batter was undercooked and I simply don’t know how it was so greasy - it’s like it wasn’t drained at all, straight out of the vat and into the paper. My husband and I both felt sick for the rest of the day. The owners might respond to this review and say we should have complained and they would have refunded…but the people ahead of us in the shop were doing just that and were basically told bad luck, there’s nothing wrong with it. My advice is avoid this place like the plague, their product is inferior.

Used to be the best place to get large delicious battered oysters/fish and chips a few years ago, but after a few recent disappointing experiences, unfortunately won't be returning.Battered Oysters were tiny, almost looked like they were cut in half.But the main problem is the grease! As many other reviewers have said, it doesn't appear they drain off the food properly, the paper is literally dripping in oil and after eating makes you feel queasy for the rest of the day. Why are they not taking these reviews on board and make a change?
