About the Business

Ivy Russell Reserve | This 7 hectare reserve on Winton"s north-west boundary is a long term kahikatea remnant restoration with extensive native plantings. With a large grassy clearing and an easy short walk, it is a great picnic spot and popular with families and dog-walkers. A creek runs through the reserve which dogs love. The relaxed 20 minute walk takes you through plantings of native tree and plants, and is pram and wheelchair friendly. This reserve is named after Miss Ivy Russell, who became the first women Town Clerk in New Zealand in 1919, holding the position for 35 years. She was also Registrar for Births, Deaths and Marriages. After retiring, she served for a time as town Librarian and in all gave nearly 50 years of local body service. The Winton Borough Council bought the reserve in the early 1980"s. This was the last stand of white pines in the area and over the years has been rejuvenated with the planting of thousands of native trees. Much of the replanting is attributable to the vision and commitment of Mr Basil Anderson and other retired men who have given many years of voluntary labour.

Ivy Russell Reserve
Nice little area by the school, takes about 10 mins to walk at a fat man's pace, nice place to take the dog, has public toilet at main carpark, links to the greater Winton boundary walk.
