A fitting memorial to the coalminers who lost their lives in the 1967 Strongman mining disaster as well as to the numerous other miners who died whilst at work here when the pit was in operation.It is so easy to forget what incredibly hard and dangerous working conditions existed in New Zealand and all within living memory.When we criticise current health and safety regulations (which we all tend to do from time to time) we should bear in mind the folk who have lost their lives and their families who have suffered as a consequence, all in the course of someone simply doing an honest day's work.Unfortunately, without regulations, too many companies will take too many risks in the name of profit and at the cost of its workforce.We should all never lose sight of this fact.

Not a lot of detail with the memorial, but it's a great place to stop for a bite to eat and a view up the coast.
