Turn off SH1 at Balcutha. Drive south past Owaka until Ratanui turnoff. Follow Purakaunui Falls Rd to Long Point Rd, then follow Purakaunui Bay Rd to end. Narrow and gravel road.Great place for camping. we stayed here for a night. We saw many people going out for surfing. we also saw sea lions. Toilet facilities were clean. Booking for tenting and camping needs to be booked prior to camping. You need to book ahead. Campsite Pass bookings must be completed before occupying a site. If you do not pre-book, campground staff (if present) may be able to make the booking for you if space is available. There is a $10 charge for this service. To avoid any disappointment book well in advance. We enjoyed the sun set. Oh before I forget .. it was really windy that day but we pitched our tent behind the shrubs and parked our car in such a way that it acted like a wind barrier for us.

A nice secluded beach & naturally protected from the wind, a magical place to wake up on a sunny morning.Warning: there are pit toilets for bogs, and bogs for wheels.

We thought we'd have a quiet weekend away at the beach - off the well trodden tourist trails but this beautiful DoC camping ground was packed, much to our surprise! And it is easy to see why. Plenty of room, toilets and taps - and a stunning beach to explore, surf or fish. Although the gravel access road was quite winding, we had no trouble towing our caravan there and really enjoyed the experience.

Great spot to stay one or more nights. Come a little early and get a spot with a view at the beach. Surfers might be happy here, too.Find some relaxed sea lions. Apparently you can spot penguins here, too.

Epic scenery, sea lions and absolutely beautiful isolated spot. The services are very basic but that was not an issue. The 6km of gravel road was in very good condition and fully drivable with campervan.

Beautiful scenery! One of my all time favourite campgrounds. I last was here six years ago with four flatmates inside a two person tent, this time my girlfriend and I had a much bigger tent and was a massive improvement on the previous sardine like sleeping conditions. Also saw some very cute dogs.

This Campground is a Gem! So much space for many lovely people to camp. You can even go on the hill and have a look over the beach or just camp directly at the beach front. Also the sunrise here is just magical and well worth to wake up early! Only downside is that there is just one toilet block, which can get very crowded in the season. But other than that, would highly recommend!

Beautiful campsite with amazing views particularly for sunrise and sunset. Easy to get to along a decent gravel road, and you can pay when you arrive with an envelope system, for $10 dollars per person. Definitely stop by if you’re heading south west!

A family favorite in the heart of the Catlins. Popular spot for freedom camping, photography, surfing, paua diving, wildlife viewing and beach walks. Long drop toilets, non treated water taps and fire bowls in campsite. Saw lots of seals and stars during our stay, highly recommend!
