About the Business

McCracken's Rest | McCracken's Rest is a lookout and rest area perched on the edge of the cliff with commanding views of Te Waewae Bay and the tiny one million year old Solander Islands, formed by the eroded skeleton of a volcano. According to Maori legend, the Solanders are the broken tooth and crumbs tossed aside by Kewa the whale, when it chewed between Stewart Island (Rakiura) and the mainland. Other highlights include views of Sand Hill Point, the Hump Ridge, Pahia Point and Stewart Island - you may even catch a glimpse of New Zealand"s largest pod of Hector"s Dolphins! McCracken's Rest is the perfect place to pause in your journey to take in the scenery and fresh air, and of course to take the classic traveller's photo in front of the signpost. Named after the landowners, Robert and David McCracken, the area includes parking space, a viewing platform, and picnic tables.

McCracken's Rest
Lookout and rest area above Te Waewae Bay.Views are impressive in bad weather, so it must be stunning when sunny (we weren't that lucky but still great place to chill and admire the nature of the scenic route.

McCracken's Rest
Nice view to see around the seaside view. It is very windy place and make you feel how the nature is powerful.

McCracken's Rest
A nice spot for a rest and pictures on the way from Te Anau to Invercargill, via Gemstone Beach on the way. The views from here are amazing and on a clear day, you can make out Stewart Island. The colours of the ocean, mountains and shoreline all make a great photo. It is a very windy spot though, so watch your hats.

McCracken's Rest
Great view of Te Waewae Bay - Look right to Fiordland National Park, look left to Stewart Island (magical if it's a clear day, wild and windy on a not so clear day!) Worth stopping at.

McCracken's Rest
Good location to see the ocean view. Quite windy with the southern edge of the island but worth stopping if driving through the area.
