Pou Pou Monument
One of the interesting monuments to see at Victoria Square in Christchurch is the Maori 'Pou Pou' monument which was erected here in 1994. This is a six-metre tall decoratively carved statue that commemorates the 19th century signing of the Tready of Waitangi between the Crown and local Maori chefs. The carving is a decorative piece of work and impressive to view up close. It represents Mahinga Kai (food source) and Tipuna (ancestors) of the Ngāi Tahu-Waitaha people.Give the monument a few minutes to view and take photograph. Note that there are several other interesting monuments at Victoria Square that are worth seeing as well. These include the Queen Victoria statue, Capt. James Cook statue and the H.L. Bowker Fountain.
