Mackenzie Alpine Horses

My husband and I did the 2hr trail ride. It was stunning! We were lucky to have gorgeous horses - Ben and Jimmy - who were sweethearts and looked after us very well. Our guide Kayla was wonderful. She gave us heaps of tips and helped us through the tricky bits, while keeping us at ease and chatting to us along the way. The view over the lake was absolutely stunning, and it was lovely to take the horses down for a drink. We were also impressed with the way they rotate the horses through and make sure they all get rest days. We had a wonderful time and would recommend this - we are beginners too so very suitable for even those who have not ridden a horse before. Thanks again Kayla, Ben and Jimmy!

What a great way to spend a Labour weekend Sunday with friends! Did the 4 hour trek with Summer, taking in spectacular mountain and lake views, walking up and over hills, through trees, water, and even stopping for bubbles and a platter on the shores of Lake Alexandrina. Even though we hadn't ridden in over thirty years, the trek was a breeze, thanks to our great guide Summer, and placid, well trained horses! MAHT are an informative and well organised team and with the Tekapo mountains as a backdrop, their horse treks come well recommended! Thanks Summer for a superb day.

We had the BEST experience trekking with this outfitter! We did a 4 hour trek and loved every minute! Zoe was our guide and she was so delightful! She was patient and so knowledgeable. She taught us about the landscape, wildlife, and the horses we were riding. We were lucky enough to have Ben and Harvey as our horses and they were great too. The horses at this outfitter were former harness racers who are trained to be trekking horses. The owners care so much about their horses and their wellbeing and it shows in the horse's attitude and behavior. There's no better way to see lake Tekapo than by horseback!

We did the alpine trail ride. It was such a quaint experience with breathtaking views. The staff here were in control and friendly. Only downside is you have to wear a helmet (so don’t forget to wear sunscreen) and can’t sign a waiver but that’s out of their control as it’s a legal requirement. The trail ride itself actually went for longer than advertised. We also got to swim with the horses afterwards. The instructor made sure we were all okay and gave many good tips. This ride would suit a beginner as well. Just a trail ride, no trotting, cantering, galloping etc. Although my horse did take off after I accidentally whipped his backside with my oilskin but easily brought back under control. Highly recommended!Take a jacket for when you get to the top as can get quite cold.

Beautiful horses, amazing trek, and a great friendly guide! If you're a beginner and want to try a horse trek this will be the place. Butt might get sore though. Worth it!

Absolutely brilliant ride out with Kayleigh and the horses. My husband and two children (7&9) had barely ridden before so we’re nervous, but they had horses perfectly suited to them and had a wonderful time. We did a one hour lake view trek which covered some of Mt John and a splash in Lake Tekapo. Kayleigh was brilliant and my daughters are in awe with her and their horses Barney and Bobby. We would definitely recommend Mackenzie Alpine Horse Trekking and would absolutely go again. Truly 5 stars!

Had an absolute blast doing this (first time horse riding). Our guide, inge, was fantastic and made for good conversation during the ride. We did the 1hr ride and the trail and views were amazing. Even got to feed the horses apples after we were done! Would come again.
