Tautuku Beach Parking

Tautuku Bay | Tautuku is a spectacular, forest-fringed bay that sweeps round to an impressive headland. From 1839 to 1846, a whaling station was sited near Tautuku peninsula's neck, and a port was later developed for the fishing, flax and timber industries. When these industries declined, the port was closed. Today, Southern Right Whales (Tohorā) are making a slow come back and can occasionally be spotted in the waters near the bay. New Zealand Sea Lions (Whakahao) and Yellow-Eyed Penguins (Hoiho) are among the wildlife that can often be seen on beach. This practically private beach is also a great place to let your dog go for a run (although do make sure there's no wildlife present before letting the go off the leash).
