Stopped by here after doing the Hobbiton tour and the walk to the top of Wairere falls, so I was starving when I got here, the people were super friendly and helpful and service was swift. I have been traveling for a month and a half here in NZ at this point and I think this is the best takeaway fish and chips I've had so far! The fish was huge and well cooked, and there was a good portion of chips. Ive gotten used to the fish being tiny at takeaway shops but the fish was bigger than my hand! Would definitely go back if I happen to be in matamata again

Broadway Burger Bar Matamata
One of the worst food experiences in my life. I should of known when I drove past and saw DKs - line of people, Broadway - none. The food took a painful 45 minutes to cook because they couldn't get the batter to stick to the freezer burnt paua fritter. The reason for this was simple, they were trying to use very old dirty oil at a ridiculously high temperature. Instead I had to stand there and watch this drongo with bumfluff on his face being inappropriate to the two young females who were desperately trying to cook the fritter. What made it worse was the happy faces from the customers walking past from the other establishment as I stood watching this trainwreck in front of me. They did offer me a free drink which I politely declined and then was asked was there anything I would like for free - only the past 45 minutes of my life back. The burnt oily batter around the thin pre-frozen hoki and dryed out chips just added insult to injury.

Sadly the batter was soggy probably pre cooked and not reheated hot enough. Main Street food shops just need to do a good job of simple food to take trade away from the mass produced burgers. Wish I could be more positive

Fish was un edible, and $10 chips?? More like $4 worth overall bad experience, felt sorry for the two young ladies in their alone they looked very overwhelmed
