Definitely recommend doing this walk. Takes a couple of hours and has some uphill but the views are worth it. Even the walk along the bridges to the hill is amazing.

Solid 3 hour drive from christchurch. Filming location for Edoras (LOTR). The last hour of driving in is all rocks and gravel. Once your there it will be all worth it. I travelled throughout the south island and this was my favourite location by far. No crowds of tourists and beautiful scenery

Not very big parking place. There is a toilet. No phone reception. The gravel road is fine and we actually drove it much faster then google maps predicted although we are not gravel-racers". So for anyone who doubts to go to this magnificent place due too the long drive.. you can easily deduct 20 minutes from your ETA (in our case it was 25 minutes only on the gravel section). The surroundings are unbelievable."

This is not a review of the carpark.However, if you want to visit one of the most iconic Lord of the rings shooting locations then this is where you have to park. Although Mt. Sunday is a bit off the normal tourists traffic route, it's worth the trip. Very nice short walk to the top of the hill for a 360 deg view of the surrounding was fun. Being a bit off the normal route means you get to enjoy the views without other tourists. The trip to get there will be through gravel road and a bit dusty.

Beautiful remote location, incredible views. Short walk to Mount Sunday, does involve wading a shallow stream. The climb up is quite short and reasonably easy walking but is steep at times - would be tricky if mobility was an issue.

Mount Sunday was loads of fun to visit. Not only a Lord of the Rings location, but also a great Scenic location as well. I probably wouldn't make the trip out there just for that though, but worth it if you are a fan of the films
