Thomas's Catlins - Lodge & Holiday Park

This lodge has a lot of history and has its own beautiful character! We’ve stayed in different lodges and backpackers before and, this lodge has the cleanest room plus the fresh bed linens! Super loved the location and the owner is friendly too. Great value for the money! They’ve got seasonal workers who stay there at times but they’re friendly and never once we felt unsafe. The kitchen utensils can be improved but that’s understandable for lodges.

I made an online booking for a powered site about 3 weeks in advance. When we got to the site there was no staff there. Called the number suggested at reception and the woman who answered seemed to have to clue about our booking. She was in Queenstown and would be returning after 5pm and didn't seem to want us there. She advised that as it's winter they don't really take bookings for powered sites, but then she told us to park at the first site. We parked up and had a look around. It was a complete mess with linen in the hallways and a damp smell all around. The kitchen was filthy and certainly not hygienic. We couldn't even bring ourselves to look at the bathrooms. The place was not liveable! We left immediately to Dunedin to seek accomodation there. Complete waste of time and money.

Thanks Bev your genuine kind-hearted hospitality made our stay. Real rural adventure loved Catlins and our stay here for 2 nights. Glad you were holding up the flag high while owners are away. Cheers and many happy memories created for my family.

This place is an historic hospital, which gives a special atmosphere. Campsites are small, but sufficient. Showers and toilets reasonably clean, kitchen not so much. Staff was very friendly. Please don't feel intimidated because of the other revews. There are indeed seasonal workers in the venue, but the though-looking guys we met were very friendly.

HAUNTED!!! Well, we think it is! Never saw the proprietor and the only person we saw on arrival was this old guy we met in the corridor….he showed us around this old hospital and said he was staying ‘a while’ and yet we never saw him again. Rooms are great, sheets are clean and it’s an interesting place to stay with real history. We’d give it 5 stars but the kitchen wasn’t clean and the corridors smell musty….. the latter perhaps befitting the ambiance!!? Great place to watch ‘The Shining!’

Inhospitable host. Definitely should not be in hospitality. Moaned and criticised everything and everyone.We left 2 days early.I feel really sorry for the young men working for Silver Ferns who have to lodge there.The ovens were filthy.The cupboards were empty of plates, cups, bowls etc. No cutlery either.Shameful.

Had a great stay! Loved the clean sheets and the room. Value for money!Would definitely recommend!

Very dirty kitchen, we did not feel safe because of the people that where hanging around in the facilities. We think that they were structural (not English speaking) residents.There was an older guy who looked like as if he was working there. He asked something, but we did not understand so we asked if he could repeat hisself. He waved it off and walked away.It was cheap but still nog worth the money.
