Great to have the surf board rental available. Lounge area outside is nice too. 4 person room is quite basic though and the kitchen is very cramped.

Very clean and peoples are very nice. At 2min of the intercity bus, and there is a car park. I'm happy to have been in this hostel. I recommend.

The rooms and the staff is really friendly, and I the surf is good and affordable, but the owner...Man he is such di**head. I just wanted to shower after I came back from the beach and I couldn't even go to the bathroom, hence otherwise I would have disturbed the other guests". And that is not even the biggest problem

Great hostel, loved all the art around the place! Would've preferred not to be stuck inside with COVID for a week but the people were super helpful and I'll 100% come back if I'm in the area again. Hopefully next time I can actually try out surfing!

Great hostel if you want to explore Westport and surroundings! Super clean, spacious, the staff is so nice and they always have great recommendations for what to do around the area. A surf school and rental on the premise is also super practical. Only the wifi was a bit slow but that doesn’t matter if you’re out exploring. Highly recommend staying here!

Rode a motorcycle from Christchurch to Westport. Got there late and tired. Everyone was lovely! The staff was really nice and I met some really awesome people staying there. Very clean. I love the communal kitchen, it made for very interesting interactions while everyone made their meals! Will definitely be coming back...

Myself and my two friends stayed at Basil's on their trip from the UK. Such a cool, quirky hostel. The rooms were clean, tidy, and well kept. I loved the artwork from previous travellers. The yurts are a fantastic idea, lit with LED lights that change colour! Steve, the surf instructor, took us out for a surf lesson and it was all of our first time surfing. It was just awesome. Thank you Fred, who organised our stay and made us pizzas! We will absolutely be back, and I will recommend the hostel to anyone heading to Westport.

Good value hostel and they had availability when we got stuck in Westport which was very welcome! Private rooms are good price in comparison to other places in New Zealand, as is surf hire including transport to one of the two main surf beaches in the area. Staff were also helpful with getting us a GST receipt for insurance purposes. Would definitely stay here if I was learning to surf in the area!
