Tongariro River Trail
Great walk even on a sunny winters day. We did the full loop which turned out to be only 13.5 km. Easy walk / riding track that was in very good condition. You can do the full length or shorten it.On the far side of the Tongariro River there are not many views of the river unless you take an off shoot to one of the many anglers fishing spots. However on the Turangi side you can see the river most of the way. Plus there are two swing bridges to explore as well.Great family walk.

We loved the walk but be aware that if you do the full circle, it is over 13km’s and does not take 2-3hours like the time on the board suggests, it is more like 3-4 hours. You can however make the walk shorter with a number of options available. You do not constantly see the river but when you do it is beautiful.

It’s almost like a secret garden. Easy trail to walk or just enjoy the view with your family. 30mins walk from the stage highway bridge to the other end. We visited multiple times when we were staying at the campsite. There are plenty activities you can do there, biking, hiking, or simply walking your dog. People are friendly. This photo is taken at an narrow path next to the main trail, though be careful it’s very slippery, the view is worth going.

It was really quiet here today. We were worried about the rain, and the mud after some massive storms but it wasn't too bad actually. We parked and started at the Google maps pin and walked up the east side of the river, crossing the Major Jones suspension bridge first. Not something you do everyday! There was an incline but very gradual going in that direction. It's mostly berry brambles on the east, gravel with a few puddles. After crossing the main Turangi bridge with the traffic, the path is marked back down the river and is more urban on the west side. Lots of anglers trail's down to the river.Suitable for kids but prams wouldn't make it through the chicanes. All trails stats: length 4.5k, elevation gain 111m, moving time 1:08 (but it was leisurely!)Off for a spa now! Enjoy your experience.

Did the full loop. One side of the trail is nicer than the other, so if we knew this, we would’ve done an out and back on the same side because the other side that follows the highway didn’t have much to see. Beautiful views at the top of the hill and at lookout points along the river.

Tongariro River Trail
This trail is SO worth the easy walk. My dear Wife and I collected about half kilo of wild Blackberrys, we saw a White faced Heron and a male and female Blue Duck which are endangered, walked a swing bridge and met lots of lovely locals and tourists from all over the world.Highly recommended. Absolutely loved it.

Great, easy walk around the Tongariro river located in Turangi. Family friendly, with numerous loops creating shorter walks to suit everyone.
