Washatipu Laundromat

Great laundry mat. Coin operated. Washers and dryers are a big size so can fit heaps in there. $4 for a wash, $4 for a dryer and $2 for detergent. You can get change from the hostel reception next door. If the main door isn’t opened on the street front you can enter via the reception. Open 9am - 9pm everyday.

Was prepared to deal with the 3 small machines with one being broken, although there was a huge industrial machine NOT being used with a sign that said ask reception to use. My wife did and the receptionist was extremely rude to let her know that under no uncertain circumstances that it was for house keeping only (despite the sign). I then went in and kindly asked if there was any chance we could use just while it wasn’t being used by housekeeping. Again - the extremely rude receptionist let me know that not only was it for house keeping but that to get that point across she was going to put a load of washing on right that second. I’ll wash my clothes in the lake next time.

It got the job done... almost. Dryer needs more time.

Self service with clear instructions...get coins $1 or $2...you can withdraw from the nearest atm which is 20 seconds away and get the cash changed for coins at the laundromat counter.

Washing machine was fine but the dryer did not do his job at all. Was almost as wet as before even though I only had one thing in it and power dry on. They told me I had to pay again for it, never again!Edit!Just saw the answer of Washatipu and I am pretty angry. I did not use it wrong, two girls were using the washing machine under the dryer and I would have definitely notice if their machine would have started and not mine but the dryer was definitely on. I called it power dry which was not their official name, but it was the version if you have lots of clothes to dry even though I only had one hoodie! And by the way nobody ever offered me a free dry even though I asked for it! Very sad that you feel the need to lie…

SUPER lovely staff next-door in the hostel, who own the laundromat. If you need any coins or washing powder, they're happy to help. Also, if they're not using the large washer/dryer they're happy for you to use it! All you have to do is ask. I needed to do an xtra- large load and they said it was completely fine to use, I just needed to wait until they were done with their housekeeping before I could use it (it is a hostel laundry after-all).

Washers and dryers are all good - new, efficient. But hostel that runs it seems to take a very casual approach to opening it on time. I showed up half an hour after the posted opening time, and it wasn't open. I came back half an hour later, and it still wasn't open. When I came back another 30 minutes later it was finally open.
