I would totally recomend Steve and Lewis (Chilli rentals)You may pay a little bit more than on the free market, but! the car is ckecked by professionals (we had a new battery and tires), transformed into a campervan, comes with some campingequipment and most important the guys care for you. Our radiator broke down somewhere in South Island- we gave them a call and had a new one 3 days later shipped from Auckland- which saved us aprox. 300 bugs to what the lokal mechanic wanted to charge us. You feel very welcome and when they say you can call me anytime they realy mean it (while for most other buisness is done after purchase)!

Chilli Rentals sold us our Toyota Estima 6 months ago. Five and a half months ago we realized that we made the worst possible deal. Selling a car at double the market price to two unknowing backpackers is mere exploitation. The kitchen and self-contained features are to say the most very poorly built. What has cost us even more is that the owner mingled the software, so that only 95 petrol is accepted, amounting to a sum of money which could have been saved. He wouldn't sell us the car if we hadn't taken fully comprehensive insurance and AA membership. We feel awfully exploited and regret spending 8000$ for a car that's really only worth 4000$. There's loads more bad stuff to say, in the end we just want to prevent fellow backpackers from making the same fatal mistake.

Such a lovely service with Steve and his son. It was a pleasure to buy this reliable car. And after I couldn't sell it before leaving new Zealand he made a fair deal for buying it back. If you gonna plan a trip to New Zealand, plan with ChilliRentals!

We bought a car for $5000 from them.At first this seemed like a good price to us but as we talked to other people and got around a bit, it turned out that the car had an actual value of around $2000. Additionally the car had (regardless of their guarantees) what we would consider as hidden issues. Although it did not affect us directly, it dramatically reduced the price we were able to sell the car for: The cambelt was due after 20000km of traveling, the clutch had never been replaced, the interior had damages which had been fixed only half-heartedly.Our advise is therefore to look around for other cars too and get an independent entity to check your vehicle first, no matter if you buy from a private or from Chilli Rentals.

We have just returned from a fantastic 9week trip to New Zealand. we contacted Steve in november 2 months before we flew out from the UK, and arranged a camper,nothing is a problem for Steve which allowed us to fell very relaxed about our trip! Steve picked us up from the airport, showed us the vans available,we made our choice we were dropped off at our hotel.The next day we were collected to start our adventure, the van was great ,our own little home for 9 weeks ,we were sad to say goodbye to hamy"Thanks Steve ...you really made it happen for us xx"

I bought a Camper off Steve early January this year. Throughout the whole process he was just a really friendly guy. In my opinion he went above and beyond with his commitment to making sure I was happy with the purchas and that I got what I needed. He said himself he wasn't after a sale, he was after a customer that will come back and made sure of that with sourcing some stuff that was specific to what I needed at no charge after I had already orchard the vehicle. Warranties provided on the items that were in the camper also. He also shared a lot of valuable information that made my first purchase of a Camper van much less worrisome.

Steve and his son are really friendly and totally know their Business. If you got any questions evenif you bought the car a while ago, you can text oder call him everytime and he will help you.At First glance it seems that the cars are more expensive than others but you can be sure that his cars a in a really good mechanical condition. And that's worth the price.And if you are trying to sell your car but got problems findig a buyer ( especially in low-season), Steve will give you a pretty good Price!! That makes your life a lot easier und stressless...

When my friend needed a vehicle to backpack around NewZealand they found a few vehicles for sale privately that were overpriced and very rough.
