I had a wonderful experience doing Throw down level 1 in term Feb-March 2023. It was my first time doing pottery and I learned a lot and even managed to build a few beautiful pieces that I can use at home now.The classes are great and cover a wide range of topics from wedging, throwing to hand building and glazes. There are only 5 students in each class and that gives you plenty of one on one time with the teacher.Melanie is a creative artist, an expert potter and a patinate teacher. She is a hands on teacher and shows you lots of techniques and helps you when you are stuck! She is very good at connecting with her students and helping them to build what they have in mind. She has an immense wealth of knowledge and she is keen to share them with her students.She is very generous when it comes to using her amazing range of glazes and clays. There are heaps of tools in her studio to play with when you are hand building.Her studio is well equipped and warm. It also has a nice quirky vibe. It is located at the heart of Dunedin and easy to access. There are plenty of carparks around in the evening for the night classes.I highly recommend MDR Ceramics and I'm looking forward to going back and doing level 2. :)

As a complete novice I wasn’t sure what to expect from MdR Ceramics level 1 course. A friend and I signed up and we got so much out of the classes... Lots of giggles, lovely people, and the benefit of Mel’s vast knowledge and skill. We surprised ourselves that we mere beginners could actually make something beautiful! We were stoked to end up with some stunning pieces to take away using Mel’s awesome glazes. Can thoroughly recommend these courses! Will definitely be signing up again!

Had a blast this year at the level 1 beginner course! Mel is awesome at creating a warm, inviting space to learn in and I've already had many compliments on the pieces I was able to create. Since the class is small (4-5 people), you’re able to get plenty of one-on-one help from Mel, but also get to know the other people in the class and share the creativity. Trimming and glazing techniques were my favourite as they really brought the pieces together at the end. Definitely planning on returning for another course in the future!

Mel’s abundant knowledge that she soooo generously shares with you definitely fast tracks building your own skills. Her ability to see how you can improve, with wee tips and tricks that are unique to your own style is like no other tutor around. The studio is set up fabulously, so there is nothing holding you back in this super warm, welcoming and fun environment. You really couldn’t find anyone better to learn from. I would highly recommend any of Mel’s classes as ones not to be missed!
