Te Anau township boarders on Fiordland National Park…. The lake is part if the park. Maori call the area Ata Whenua (Shadow land). Te Anau is a place worth spending a few days. Laid back , great restaurants, greater people. Us humans share this beautiful place with the flora and fauna … its how the world once was and why we should understand it to protect while being allowed to be part of it … Respect and enjoy!

This is a must see lake, which is easy when you are in Te Anau. There are boat trips and seaplane rides on the lake. These would be great on a nice clear day. The lake is about 400 m deep. The bottom is about 200 m below the sea level and the surface is about 200 m above sea level. With have a look at the lake by day and dusk.

Walked a couple kilometers around the lake before boarding a catamaran for a ride across the lake to the Glowworm Caves. It is a beautiful lake with beautiful shorelines. Trail along the lake had some people, bit was not overly busy at 4 PM on a week day. A very enjoyable experience. If taking a boat across the lake, especially morning and evenings, I'd recommend a sweat shirt or jacket as it does get cool at 20-25 knots.

Te Anau Lake was the departure point for the Milford hike. We took the ferry from here to the start of the hiking point. A beautiful, quiet lake.

Absolutely beautiful windswept & wild lake which happens to be the largest southern glacial lake. The walk on the foreshore in front of the small town of Te Anau is a must do. Lots of birdlife around now due to the vigilant trapping of predators. Then there is the small bird sanctuary about a km out of town which houses the beautiful & almost extinct takahe.

Good place to stop by if you are in the way to Milford sound. Few good restaurants at the place plus a large convenience store to get your drinks and other stuff. Small town with wonderful people. There are petrol pumps at the place and do stop by at few good photo taking spots while in the way to Milford sound from this place. Plan your lunch stop here if not staying at the place. We stayed two nights here to explore the place plus as our stopping place while visiting Milford sound. There is one birds sanctuary here to visit too and learn more about a rare species of bird.

Te Anau is my favourite small town in New Zealand and a popular spot for visitors. The lake is absolutely spectacular in all areas and is best visited on a sunny day. It is also a quiet spot making it an easy getaway location for a holiday. This town is often stopped at by tourists who are either on their way to Milford Sound or Doubtful Sound.
