Oban Visitor Centre

Great staff, very helpful, but let down by their head office a little. Really useful having mountain bikes to rent (though if not up for the exercise the electric bikes on the island are highly recommended) but the Red Shed folks are not being given the staff or training to service them at the moment. The staff were great when the one I rented failed on me, but it wouldn’t have happen with proper maintenance.

Being on this island was best experience in my whole vacation. Went there book car, nice lady give us information and we just loved everything.

We booked a vehicle through the Oban Visitor Centre to maximize our time on the island. You can ring a few days ahead to reserve a car. There is information about what to do on Stewart Island, gifts for purchase and a toilet to use as well. Great customer service also

Not sure where to go in Stewart island? Inquire at the Red shed.Very helpful and friendly staff. They are more than happy to assist you/point you to the right direction. You can book tours, shop souvenirs, rent scooters, ask for information, and bonus- they have a toilet too. We bought an Ulva island booklet here before heading out. Even without itinerary, we were able to maximize our day trip in Stewart island with the help of these guys! Much appreciated.

Don't be misled, unless you are not really wanting to find out about what is on offer. This business calls itself Red Shed, painted red, and Oban (the name of the town in Stewarts Island) Visitor Centre. In reality it is the booking office of the ferry company, not an independent visitor centre. The ferry company seems to have the location to entice you to what they call the visitor centre. There are no i-sites, which is confusing, on the Island, it seems that some businesses need to do their own bookings to get a chance to survive. If you go to the Red Shed, they will offer you ferry company tours first and you don't get to hear about other options. They also offer a bus tour that carefully picks out businesses they want you to know about. Check out other options so you get the best choices.

As you come off the ferry the visitors centre is on your right.As you come off the plane bus it is to the left. Easy to find and very informed people. As with most people living on the island giving visitors help and cheer is part of your usual day.I heard the workers explaining about alternatives and support all businesses. The building is called the red shed. You can use eftpos and credit cards and they help with bookings for tours and accommodation.They also have souvenirs for yourself or entire family.Lots of maps and pamphlets plus help for no cost.

I set my satnav for Oban visitor centre,and it took me on a very long journey to eventually reach here. I meant Oban in bloody Scotland

Information, shop and booking tours for 'Real Journeys'. Take a quick bus trip around the island to get your bearings and enjoy the stories from the witty driver. Ulva Island is magnificent. Small group size with the local guide means you get to see and learn, a whole lot more about Stewart Island. We happened to have the same guide for our Kiwi Experience. Seeing kiwi in the wild and up close, made me a very happy kiwi.
