Catons Bay Freedom Camp
Was quiet creeped out I got there and took my tent out my boot and all of a sudden I hear footsteps every time I would look up it would stop 100% got the chills all over! Left straight away!! And not to mention the amount of bugs you can literally hear them swarm around you!!

Catons Bay Freedom Camp
Not really ideal to stay overnight as it is on the main road, it attracts bogans (see other reviews). There's safe and friendly camping at the Little River Campground a few k's up the road. in Okuti Valley. It's where I live.

A beautiful place by the mountains. Peaceful place to be to freedom camp. Though it's 35-45 mins away from chch it's worth a go people.

Spent the night here nice and peaceful the local chooks are handy to have around incase you have any food scraps they're right on it had another couple pull in and pitched their tent up was lovely watching the sunset would definitely stop in again

It's a portaloo in a layby. It allows freedom camping I believe, but I doubt it would be restful as it's right by the road. Pleasant lakeside view

Great location with views out over lake Forsyth. Best for self contained vehicles.

Catons Bay Freedom Camp
Free and close to Christchurch but not super nice. The lake was foamy and had a moderate toxic algae warning and an unpleasant smell. Lots of waterfowl which were gorgeous and chatty. We also made the mistake of leaving the window open at night with the light on. So many bugs were in our campervan.

Good spot by the lake.We stayed here in our self contained vehicle for one night.At around 10pm a car of disenchanted youths arrived to drink and smoke weed, and whilst they were not too disruptive to us, they did smash some bottles, left a mess and drove off drunk and high.Of course, the freedom campers will get the blame for the mess, as is much the case across NZ - locals refuse to accept that many of the issues with environmental respect lies within their own community and not with self contained van folk.
