The location is the southernmost point of Wellington. It is a small local beach with very strong winds and cold water compared to other Wellington beaches. The bus NO1 is the last station.

Its always worth a trip to Island Bay, a stones throw from the Wellington city CBD. The local Art Galleries are vibrant and well worth visiting. The key attractions to Island Bay are its unique beaches and assortment of moored small fishing boats. Added to this is the Bays Italian history of its fishing families. The Bay itself surrounds the Island which is a few hundred metres off shore. The beaches and walkways are safe and easy to follow.

Island Bay Beach
Beautiful spot to be enjoyed with a cold drink or a picnic. Lots of surf and sand to enjoy. Great facilities nearby. Local cafes and friendly helpful people. Nice all year round and plenty of sunshine here. Unique and stylish walkways that are accessible to all. The South Island can be easily seen on a clear day. The beach can be very windy and cool in the winter. On a clear sunny day this beach is very majestic.

Love this place, lived here 16 years ago and the beach remains a favourite place to visit, in all weathers, wonderful in a storm with southerly wave crashing over Taputeranga the island.Cross the road to the recently renewed Shorland Park, neat area on the coast. The number 1 bus route starts/stops here with regular service through the city.

Probably the best beach in the main wellington region (unless you want to surf) It's never too busy and the waters always freezing but what do you expect you choose to live in wellington.

Great area and atmosphere but lacks some basic facilities. An outdoor shower closer to the beach entrance would be a great addition. There seems to be one nearby but its inside the park which is a wee walk depending on what end of the beach you're at. There are also no toilets nearby unless you walk (again) to the park.In my opinion this is an area with a lot of potential. Comparing with Scorching Bay for example, there's toilets and showers by the beach. A cafe that serves good food too so yeah, I wish we had better infrastructure in Island Bay.

I really like this place, never really seen a marine area with these qualities before. I could sit there for hours an watch the cray boats go in an out

Lovely Sandy beach on the south coast of Wellington that is great for swimming as the island shelters the beach from the swell. There are toilets in the surf lifesaving building and parking on the roadside all along the beach. No dogs are allowed on this beach.
