Easy helpful staff. Not a very large shop at all, and to be honest the DOC website is excellent. Still ok for maps and great walks queries/ brochures etc. Didnt go to the DOC offices behind... sells some tacky touristy stuff as well.

They banned unvaccinated from campsites because they considered it a risk to staff. Even though all the vaccine does is protect the unvaccinated from us. Doc using covid as an excuse to ban people. I never thought they would stoop so low. Shame on you.

The information staff gave about a local trek was limited. This is more a gift shop (where all maps of treks cost $1.50 to $27.00) than a place for visitor guidance. They were unable to give information beyond what we read in paid pamphlets. Instead they recommended calling other visitor centres (from a pay phone across the street). This experience has left us reluctant to further explore New Zealand’s nature.

I had a good experience at this place. Central in the capital it is easily accessible by public transport. Staff was very well informed and managed to help me with my preparations for Te Araroa. They have a ton of info material such as books, brochures and maps but probably the best way to get informed is to talk to one of the very friendly staff and get your information from them.
