Incredible quality stone hut cabin with amazing views, for only a 90 to 120 minute walk! Definitely worth it. Be aware you need to book this hut online, but very cheap considering what you get.

We went up kaituna valley to packhorse hut.Although the weather was bad with rain the whole walk getting up to the hut was such a reward. We got the fire on as soon as we got there and it kept us warm and dry over night.Facilities were great and there’s space for campers too.Highly recommend for a day trip, or overnight

This is one of the most popular scenic walks in Canterbury. This is a new first for me and on my hike, goats were evident and love many weeds. Generals and farmers always fight the last war with outdated tactics and strategies. The goats are not a pest and a credit to the innovation of the farmer. They will clear a pasture of wild blackberry vines before touching the clover. When pastured together, goats and sheep complement each other. The goats will browse the woodier material while the sheep graze the tender grass. The Packhorse Hut walk is a great 4-5 hour return walk for families with kids with sweeping views of Banks Peninsula and Lyttelton Harbour.  As you climb up you will be able to see out to the snow cap mountains of southern alps, and Lake Ellesmere. Your climbing efforts will be rewarded with a nice rest at the historic Packhorse Hut, at the Sign of the Packhorse.  This used to be a place to stop when people travelled from Akaroa over to Lyttelton and Christchurch.

Fantastic place! Quintessential kiwi hutt, with a beautiful view of the harbour and plenty of nice walks around. Great facilities, fire kept us toasty and warm and made sure we didnt regret our decision to head up here in the cold season!

What a great spot so close to Christchurch. It's a moderate walk either way you go and a great hut with everything you need.

Unlike most New Zealand Huts, this one looks like an actual hut. The track to get here is easy and the location for the hut is very pleasant. The hut itself is quite small and, to be honest, I do not know if I'd sleep here... 10 beds, squeezed in one room, the odds are high you always get someone snoring badly. There is no kitchen, though, and the sink is outside. Also, the wind whistles through the fireplace and it is quite noisy. Anyway, it is a very beautiful half-day walk.Highly recommended

Beautiful landscape there, we walked from Kaituna Valley Packhorse Hut Track Car Park, took us about 2 to 3 hours including return. The track is quite steep, but not too long, I will come back for sure!

What's not to like. Stunning views and just the right amount of walking for our family (youngest is 9) on a hot day. Kiwi Guardians has a post up there, and kids were happy exploring around the hut. We camped, understand can get windy there, but norwest not too bad when we stayed.

A lovely walk up to the hut from Kaituna Valley (1 hour ish). Great views from the top, more track options from there. Will be returning to do more. Basic hut, but all you need. Have to book.
