A good place to visit at the end of a long scenic drive. Some historical writings to read and an area to walk through with interesting mountain related subjects.

Cafe is under renovation at the moment, do bring plenty of food there if planning to do full day hike. Visitor center is small, has some informative video clips and knowledge of the mountain. Liked the model of the mountain at the entrance. Also like the rubbish free idea, so remember to bring a rubbish bag to bring all your rubbish home as no rubbish bin provided. Too bad not much shady area around the centre, wish they could put umbrella or plant few bigger trees outside

Nothing is more exciting to breathe fresh air and scenery view of the mountain. Good place to see the whole town from the top as well.

The walk up to the outlook is nice, although the weather was not exactly perfect but a great view all the same. We finished off with the loop walk

Carpark gets quite full during the summer on good days, so being there as early as possible/or later in the afternoon to beat peak times is advisable. Inside there is a toilet and DOC staff for information, and a small shop. Cafe hasn't been open for a while. Visitor center closes in the late afternoon but there's toilets still accessible from the outside and parking overnight is allowed too. Overall a good place to start many great walks from, summit track is about 4 hours from there.

If you're planning to go over the holiday period, make sure you arrive early and have a plan before you arrive. Upon arrival we were greeted" by a parking assistant who immediately questioned what walk we would be doing and how long we would be without explanation. They put us in a three hour max park so it all felt a little rushed
