I cannot begin to explain how amazing this Spanish school is.I have had the pleasure of having both Dana and Cynthia as teachers who are both wonderful at giving energy and enthusiasm to students for their learning. The teachers clearly have a passion for teaching, and seeing their students thrive. They are patient, but able to pace the class well. All the course content is designed by the (co-)directors. It is so well thought through and brings the learning alive. I have not been to a Spanish-speaking country in years, but I can say that with only 2 hours a week with Wellington Spanish Hub, my Spanish seems to be improving exponentially.Exceptional teachers, fantastic and fun school. I can not recommend Wellington Spanish Hub enough.

I have taken intermediate classes with Dana, and 3 terms (I think) of conversations with Caro. Both Caro and Dana are gifted teachers who bring intelligence, verve, flair, grace, curiosity and a real joy to the task. As an adult learner with a (more than) full time job, I need a class that gives energy back rather than draining it, and these classes do that for me. The classes are well organised and fun. I highly recommend Wellington Speaks Spanish.

Cannot recommend Dana and Cynthia’s classes highly enough. I have been coming here for over a year now and have brought many friends along with me since.

TL;DR: excellent language school; enroll while you can.I am one of those who first enrolled when the school started a year ago. I initially planned to study at Wellington Speaks Spanish for a couple of terms or so, just to brush up my Spanish which I took for a year as an academic requirement when I was 16. But now, I’m in more than I planned to. Why?THE SYLLABUS and PEDAGOGY. In my opinion, the fastest way to learn a language outside the native environment is by using the CEFRL. Sure, we can learn a language on our own, especially if we have the knack for languages; but to many of us mere mortals, an outside help would make learning faster and easier.Compared to copious reliance on grammar books and multimedia, and tedious rote-memorization and translation approach common during my academic formation years (I took other languages, including some ancient ones, as part of my bachelor’s and graduate-level degree requirements), I think a CEFR-based syllabus enables a learner to easily track one’s progress and be more motivated to continue. Having said that, at WSS it’s true that you will be speaking a bit of Spanish from Day 1, even if you are an absolute beginner. You will not go home empty. Profesora Cynthia would sometimes do it in a way that the learner would be able to figure out the meaning and the sense of what she is saying—like how we intuitively acquire language as a child, without boring us and overwhelming us with the dreaded verb conjugations and grammar rules, though she explains those rules if needed.I believe I learned and improved a lot more than I did when I was 16 (that’s a learning gap of almost 30 years). And I would attribute that improvement mainly to WSS’s CEFR-based syllabus and the skill of the language instructor. Of course, any teacher can use CEFR and can prepare a great syllabus; but teaching requires a different skill, which brings us to the next important element.THE INSTRUCTOR. I’ve been under Profesora Cynthia since Day 1, Level A1.1. A native speaker does not necessarily make a good language teacher; but I think Profesora Cynthia is gifted and talented and skilful. Our class is engaging and fun. With her, you won’t be embarrassed to commit mistakes in her class. Mistakes could be helpful though, for they us lead towards learning.Having taught in a tertiary-level myself for some time during my younger years I know that even with the same students present, each day is never the same—on some days learners would come enthusiastic and bubbly and at times lethargic and passive—therefore a skilful teacher would be able to sense that and adjust her teaching strategy according to the prevailing class disposition without diverging too far away from the lesson of the day. There were days that the class would not be in the mood to participate and speak, but before the class ends, Profesora Cynthia would surely and deftly prod us and prevail upon us to speak Spanish. This, I think, among other things, is what makes her an excellent, exceptional, teacher.I cannot speak about the other teachers for I’ve not studied under them.THE TUITION. The term “expensive” or “cheap” is relative to one’s priorities and idea of fun: a non-artist would find art materials expensive, someone who’s not into running would find running shoes pricey, and so on. While the tuition at WSS is reasonable the opportunity to learn from the best teacher there is, is what one I believe should focus on, for it is rare to come by.Learning a new language is all fun and games until you reach a certain level where you will ask yourself “Why am I doing this? Why should I spend time and money for language lessons when I could spend them on something else?” Whatever your realisation is, I hope it will not be like mine—laden with regrets for the lost decades I could never get back: “I should’ve done this earlier”.

Cynthia is a fantastic teacher and always pushes us as a team to learn and improve in the most fun ways ☺️ I feel like we have all learnt so much in such a short period of time! The course books are awesome, the lessons are always varied, and I always leave feeling energised and motivated to learn more. I'm joining for my 3rd term now because I can't get enough!
