Mangatepopo Hut
We spent the night there on the way to the Tongariro crossing. The place was very warm and the Ranger Jamie was lovely. They have around 14 matts, quiet comfortable but a bit noisy if you turn around during the night. If you are a light sleeper, you can pitch your tent instead of sleeping in the hut...it will be colder ;) they have some dry toilets and water. The water is not treated so bring a filtration device if you can. If not I drank the water and I was fine. The chicken is big enough so people can cook at the same time. We used our own gas canister but you can use theirs. You will wake up with a nice view when you walk around the hut but nothing compared to the view you get at the crossing... breathtaking. Enjoy guys

A great hut, perfect size in every regard and the gas fireplace is much easier to start and warm up the room than the other wood fire huts

We camped for a night at Mangatepopo Hut along the Tongariro Northern Circuit. Incredible to be nestled alongside volcanoes with stunning views of Tongariro, Ngāuruhoe, Ruapehu and Taranaki in the far distance. All facilities at the hut were well maintained and we loved the deck with scenic spots to sit and enjoy. Sunset is best viewed from the campsite, if you’re lucky you’ll be treated to incredible hues of red and orange with Taranaki vaguely visible on the horizon. Bookings are essential during the Great Walks season and a ranger is there at all times, water and gas are all accessible at the hut however off-season you’ll need to bring your own supplies. Great hut and highly recommended!

Its awesome. Cant explain the happiness I felt in the lap of mother nature. Stayed in tent. Very helpful ranger. Basic facilities available. Small swim hole 5 minutes down the hut.

Lovely little hut before the devil's staircase. Just two small rooms fitting about 15 people in each. The camp sites looked great too. The sunset streams through the kitchen in the evening. Have your camera ready

The hut is right at the start if the Tongariro Crossing, stayed here when I was doing the Tongariro Northern Circuit. The Hut is quite nice, Located about 30 mins from the start of the crossing it might be a good idea to stay here if you were going to do the crossing the next day.

The location is fabulous, looking up the head of the valley towards Mts Tongariro and Ngaurahoe. The Hut itself is a bit average, the living/cooking area small for the sleeping capacity and it's quite old, but still serviceable. No wood there when we stayed so brought our own. Fire itself works well.

Spacious hut. Has a fireplace, gas cooker and lighting. Easy walk from the nearest car park. Great views. A warden was on site when we were there.
