Hau Nui Wind Farm

Of interest as this is NZ's first wind farm. It would now be considered very small, with 15 x 550 kW turbines, producing around 22 GWh annually, enough for around 2,000 homes. First tranche installed in 1996 or nearly thirty years ago, and will be coming to the end of their productive life soon. Mean windspeed is around 9.5 m/sec. which as international comparison goes is quite good for smaller turbines like this. There are many sites much more accessible in NZ just as good as this, and I am not sure why this somewhat remote area became NZs first wind farm. As a monument to the failure of NZ to seriously capitalise on the country's abundant wind power over the last 25 years
