Lake Waikaremoana
First thing to know is you can complete the walk either way which means starting the walk from Onepoto Carl park or take the taxi to Whanganui hut and walk back to Onepoto car park.We started our walk from Onepoto car park. Stay led first night at Panekiri hut, beautiful place to stay first night it being the highest point of the whole tramp. Surrounded with beautiful views of the lake as the pictures might explain. We ended up booking a little late therefore had to camp out in Maranui hut which was not a bad place to be except for the sand flies that sting you places you never knew you could be bitten. We underestimated our walk for the third day as we left Korokoro waterfall and walk to Marauiti Hut not knowing it would take us 6-7hours to reach there. So if you are staying at the campsite on second night better complete waterfall same day.Last day walk was awesome mostly flat, few hill climbs here and there but nothing major. All in all I would recommend this walk to everyone. Such an amazing job done by Department of Conservation. Not to forget the boat ride back to the car park is the cherry on top of the great walk, pick pointing all the places you would have walked in those four days.

Lake Waikaremoana is an absolute must-see part of New Zealand. The Great Walk track is the North Islands most popular Great Walk. Book a guided tour with Walking Legends and only carry a day pack!

Waikaremoana is a beautiful place with amazing views of the lake. Natural bush as far as the eyes can see. It has many walkways that are a mixture of easy and med hiking. I would recommend that you visit during summer time as winter can be challenging. With snow and road closures due to road/hill slips. Also if you visit please ensure to keep Te Urewera clean by taking all your rubbish with you when you leave. No electricity, No cell reception, No Gas and No Treated water. You can rent a beaken from the boat transportation service areas. We did trekking during winters and I will recommend you to try it out in Summers orelse trekking would be challenging. We were unable to use the tracks either.

One of New Zealand great walks. Amazing scenery and is a tramp showing untouched NZ. Road to the tramp is gravel and lots of pot holes. Huts are great.

A favourite location, beautiful ancient forests, love the several hours worth of gravel roads to this remote haven. We've seen kiwi, and weka roadside, and wild pig, deer from the road whilst in transit.Crystal clear streams, and best during and after rain, with everything fresh and misty. The waterfalls are also beautiful to search out.Take care on the roads, look out for rockfalls, wild stock roaming, including cattle and horses.Always remember to take out what you take in, especially your rubbish.

I'd recommend going during the summer because there will be more people around and because it gets quite cold up there on the winter. The trek is not that hard, it does have some uphill parts that will make you a little tired depending on how heavy your stuff is. Don't forget to bring enough food if you're doing the whole walk, make sure you bring fire sources and a good camping knife. Water and wood are provided at the huts. You'll have beautifull views of the lake, it is worth a visit.

Excellent place. Te Urewera camping, tramping, and recreational hunting is awesome. Fishing both Waikeremoana and Waikareiti lakes are hidden gems. Worth taking the time to hike the trails.. Recreational hunters make sure you have a permit to hunt, Good hunting.

Beautiful walk! If you are fit and don't stop all the time to take photos of the many point of view, you'll probably be much faster than what the sign are saying so take your time and enjoy!

Lake Waikaremoana
Beautiful Lake and heaps to do in the region. If coming from north the gravel road is intense and takes a good car and experienced driver. Definatley worth it when you get there it is beautiful and serene, the forest and surrounding lakes are also mind blowing. Ultimate place to relaxation and exploring nature at its finest and untouched. The photos form the lake high up are from Loos lookout its a 30 min walk up, and 15 mins down
