We had a cracking sunrise here. The sound of the river was soothing. The drop toilet was a bit wiffy but the site was pretty. Near the road but it didn't disturb us.

Really loved this campsite, ended up staying here all 3 nights in Arthur's pass. Not as busy as avalanche creek campsite. Many spots near the shelter/outhouse. One of the staff at the visitor center guided us to the opposite side of the main klondyke site, which is a gravel road which gets rougher further you go. That area is mainly for self-contained vehicles but we were told non-self contained could stay close to the two outhouses along the path. It's an incredible spot all the way by the end, being further from the traffic makes it very quiet. The braided river near the main klondyke site dried up after a few days of rain, perhaps this is typical, I was amazed at how much it disappeared just a day after. One photo is on the first day there, another with a similar angle is on the second with almost no river left (both viewing the same mountain)

Cool campsite, a bit of rubbish around but I picked up the big bits. Otherwise bloody good, great ground for camping (away from the tree's). Temp was -1 in August.

I stopped here to eat my lunch on the way from ChCh to Greymouth. The scenery is outstanding and I'm sure would be a nice place to camp (might be a bit windy though). There is a basic shelter with a bench, sink and running water (no power) and a well maintained long drop.

We have camped here a couple of times on the way through Arthur's Pass and for Coast to Coast. Very affordable DOC spot, long drop and running water onsite. Great spot plenty of room for tents and caravans etc. Do not underestimate the mosquitos/sand flies, they are everywhere and just want to be all up in your exposed flesh business all the time. Recommend covering up and wearing as much deet as you can find. Beautiful walk down to the river, perfect for skimming stones and relaxing. Great spot.

Heaps of sand flies, and there is free camping if you drive west along to the end of a gravel drive (with toilet).
