The Bakery Cottages
We stayed at Bakery Cottages as part of our Otago Rail Trail trip. The cottage was amazing. Everything was there for us and we felt very welcome and safe. It was very close to the pub as well as being very close to the restaurant we had booked.

The Bakery Cottages
Our name was on the door when we reached the Bakery Cottages, and the brown hens, in their big open pen ran up to the wire to greet us. The cottages are built of schist on the outside with walls more than a foot thick, to deal with the Otago winter cold. The old lintel and threshold between the great room and kitchen have been preserved and some of the building's secrets carefully shown to visitors. While the history is still there, the kitchen and bathrooms, are light, bright, modern and the water is hot, with great pressure. Part of the charm of these cottages is the effort which the proprietors have gone to decorate - a spray of roses in a wall niche, a swathe of satin at the head of the bed, old books, presented tied, as if ready to take to school. The textiles on the bed ranged from ruched velvet to a patchwork quilt, all beautifully put together with an air of gleaming shabby-chic. There was also an elegant little bell-jar, with complimentary cake and our thoughtful hosts also shared the delicious fresh eggs from their hens. I can't wait to go back.
