Araite uru was one of Kupe’s kaitiaki on his journey from Hawaiki to Aotearoa. Now Arai te Uru is one of the kaitiaki taniwha of the wahapu. This place is rich in cultural history, but it also has some walking tracks to the most beautiful views. One of the best places to watch the sunset. There are rock pools down the bottom however, tourists need to be respectful of this place and stop nude sunbathing and swimming in this area. Always lock your car and keep your valuables hidden.

Plenty of parking and an easy, short walk offering panoramic views of the coastline and harbor. Other options for longer walks too, down to the water. Signs in car park explain the history and legends of the area.Nice spot to stretch and break up your West Coast drive but no bathrooms, FYI.

Watched the last sunset of 2021 here! Absolutely gorgeous little beach that we had all to ourselves. This memory will stay with me forever, the night sky is insane on a clear night like ours.

The history of this place dates back to 1838 when the local chiefs granted a large part of Arai-Te-Uru to John and Kiriora Martin to establish the first signal station which served the region for the next several decades. This is probably the next stop off waipoua forest. Take a quick detour to this lookout to get breathtaking views of the sea and beaches.
