Update: The business does not take ownership for the guests actions as this incident seems to have repeated. 8am walking to work having abuse yelled from what seemed to be the second level from intoxicated people… not good and definitely not safe.Was walking to the library and was abused by people that gave off a homeless persona, than noticed they where drinking alcohol and smoking cigarettes in what seemed to be the entrance to the business?

You could make worst choices in Dunedin.

The room was fine just could use a bit of paint around the windows. Bathroom facilities were clean. The place could use some signs on the doors to find room numbers and even the kitchen from the main lounge. Pleasant atmosphere.

When I arrived in Dunedin I checked into Uptown Backpackers. I ended up staying for 2 months! Reason? Because it’s an awesome place to stay!!Great staff, a variety of different people to chill with and great services. Awesome showers, comfortable bunks, amazing kitchen, with free breakfast as well! And of coarse 2 months of being hooked on playing bowling on their Nintendo wii haha. The location is awesome, 2 min walk to supermarket and bus station, a convenience store on the corner and many shops and bars etc so close, especially Trojan Turkish kebab shop, I downed many of the meat chips and cheese lol. So if your wanting a memorable stay then stay here! Thank you to all the staff and other guests for the great memories.

not a good place to stay bad staff habits, food goes missing

Nice place to stay. Good location and wonderful staff. There is a bit of street noise so bring earplugs.

I stayed for nearly two months at this place and I have to say, it was a great experience! As an international student on a budget, I had to be frugal and so I was a bit skeptical when I first booked this place but I was relieved after I arrived. From the moment I arrived, the owner and staff went above and beyond to make my stay as comfortable and accommodating as possible (also made nice friends with the staff and regret that I didn't get to know each of them longer). The place is in Central Dunedin so its very accessible n very close to the bus stand, shopping mall, retail grocery marts like countdown, cafes, restaurants etc.The room was spacious and clean, I also appreciated the thoughtful amenities, such as the complimentary coffee and tea station, the kitchen, air fryer, fridge, and the high-speed internet access.One of the things that really impressed me about this hotel was the level of service. The staff was always friendly, polite, helpful, and they were quick to respond to any requests or questions that I had. Whether it was helping me with my bookings, accommodating special requests or recommending a great restaurant nearby, they were always happy to help.Overall, I would highly recommend Uptown to anyone (especially, international students who still haven't found an apartment when they arrive here. however, the uni is about 2km away n takes 15m to reach by walk at a brisk pace) who's looking for a comfortable, reasonably priced (NZ is expensive and this place had the best rates I could find in Dunedin) and convenient place to stay. The staff, amenities, and facilities were all great and I'm grateful especially, to the owner n staff: Ben, Carmen, Phil and Sam. Thanks guys.Jonathan

Staff was wonderful. I ended up staying a day more. They were very kind and helpful. It was also very clean. Perfect location. I missed the oven in the kitchen and the possibility to wash clothes. The rooms were not so bad except that there were no lockers for two guests and the beds were squeaky and not very comfortable.The hostel is also in the center so it can be noisy. I enjoyed my stay here though. That's why I stayed longer.
