Upper Mangatawhiri Campsite
Definitely off the beaten track, bring a strong tent and plenty of water. Roads are largely gravel so be prepared for a few bumps. After all that though you will be rewarded with some of the most beautiful sights imaginable, lush forests and gentle flowing streams, bonus points if you spot an eel. Well worth the effort it takes to get there.

So beautiful spent two nights there view is amazing only down fall was no service but besides that enjoyed our stay there definitely be back again

Upper Mangatawhiri Campsite
If you are looking for an off the grid location, Upper Mangatawhiri is pretty good, only an hour away from Auckland central, last 5 km you are traveling on a gravel road and arrive into the area with no cell phone coverage which could be great for some, to stay away from the phone for a bit. There are multiple tracks, mostly tramping tracks around the area.

Did one of the walks in the area. It is remote so prepare and bring proper gear. I had a fall and it took a lot longer than I expected.

Great camping for all ages. BBQ places, shady trees and lots to do. Reasonable swimming holes, but cattle and sheep were found to be standing in the stream further up.

Such a beautiful campsite! The track is nice and clean! Green forest and the dam is 5 minutes away from the campsite. But the toilet is so dirty! The smelliest public toilet I have ever been! Please clean it for the safety of our children!

Upper Mangatawhiri Campsite
I recently visited Upper Mangatawhiri campsite on a year 10 outdoor ed school trip, and it was a really great experience. Despite the foggy morning, we were able to snap some amazing photos of the area. The only downside was the condition of the toilets - they were pretty horrible, and the lock on the bathroom door was broken. However, this minor inconvenience didn't detract from the overall experience. I would highly recommend visiting Upper Mangatawhiri for a peaceful and picturesque camping trip."
